Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting
Vocabulary:
Addition Property of Equality - Subtract from the positive number in the equation.
Subtraction Property of Equality - Add to the negative number in the equation.
Inverse Operation - Undo the operation present in the equation. Do the opposite.
Examples:
Addition Property
x - 8 = 17 Remember we want to get the variable alone by using inverse operation.
+8 = +8 This cancels out the negative 8, add the 8 to the 17 (Whatever you do on one side of the
x = 25 = sign you must do on the other side.
Subtraction Property
a + 5 = 11 Do the same thing as you did above. The only difference will be instead of adding you
- 5 - 5 will subtract. Again, this will cancel out the positive 5. Don't forget...Whatever you do on
a = 6 one side of the = sign you must do on the other side.
