Equivalent Fractions and Decimals

Vocabulary

Terminating Decimal - decimals such as, 0.75 and 1.2 are terminating decimals because the decimals
                                     come to an end.
Repeating Decimal -  If a decimal repeats the pattern such as 0.333 or 0.7272. it can also be written
with a line over the repeating part.

Fractions and Equivalent Decimals
Decimals are a type of fractional number. The decimal 0.5 represents the fraction 5/10. The decimal 0.25 represents the fraction 25/100. Decimal fractions always have a denominator based on a power of 10.
We know that 5/10 is equivalent to 1/2 since 1/2 times 5/5 is 5/10. Therefore, the decimal 0.5 is equivalent to 1/2 or 2/4, etc.
Some common Equivalent Decimals and Fractions:
  • 0.1 and 1/10
  • 0.2 and 1/5
  • 0.5 and 1/2
  • 0.25 and 1/4
  • 0.50 and 1/2
  • 0.75 and 3/4
  • 1.0 and 1/1 or 2/2 or 1
How To Make the Fraction a Decimal

To change the fraction into a decimal THINK bottom into the top.

Example

3/5 - Ask yourself how many times will 5 go into 3? None.  So we add a decimal to the back of  the 3.
Now the problem looks like this 3.0/5. How many times will 5 go into 30, 6 times. This time we
asked about 30 and not 3. We put a decimal after 3 and added a 0 this is where we get our 30. Because we asked about 30 we bring the decimal straight up and the 6 after the decimal. This means that our equivalent decimal to the fraction 3/5 is .6 or 0.6 .
