Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting (1-10)

Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting

Vocabulary:

Addition Property of Equality - Subtract from the positive number in the equation.
Subtraction Property of Equality - Add to the negative number in the equation.
Inverse Operation - Undo the operation present in the equation. Do the opposite.

Examples:

Addition Property

x - 8 = 17    Remember we want to get the variable alone by using inverse operation.
+8  = +8    This cancels out the negative 8, add the 8 to the 17 (Whatever you do on one side of the
x     =  25    = sign you must do on the other side.

Subtraction Property

a + 5 = 11   Do the same thing as you did above. The only difference will be instead of adding you
   -  5   - 5   will subtract. Again, this will cancel out the positive 5. Don't forget...Whatever you do on
a   = 6     one side of the = sign you must do on the other side.
