Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers

Vocabulary

Rational Numbers - A number taht can be written as a fraction with integers for its numerator and
                                denominator.

Least Common Multiple (LCM) - The smallest common multiple of a set of two or more numbers.

( < ) Less than  - The symbol < means less than. An easy way to remember that this < is less than,
think of it as a "L" in less than.
( > ) Greater than - The symbol > means greater than. This is easy to recall, if you remember the "L"
for this symbol (<) is less than.

Examples

Comparing Fractions     5  =  25          5  = 5 . 5 = 25      Notice we multiply the denominator and
                                       6      30          6     6 . 5    30       numerator by 5. We know that 5/6 is
equivalent to 25/30 because we multiplied
the denominator and numerator by the same
                                                                                          rational number.
Lets try another one      7 = 21            7 = 7 . 3 = 21
                                     10   30           10   10 . 3   30       Now we can compare 5/6 to 7/10. Which is
                                                                                         greater? Well 25/30 > (greater than) 21/30.
                                                                                         Therefore, 5/6 > 7/10.

HINT

When you compare fractions to decimals, or percents in any form, rewrite them so you are dealing with the same form (fraction, decimal, percent). This will make it easier for you to put them in order. After you have them in order put the items back into their original form (fraction, decimal, percent).
