Vocabulary:
Integers - The set of whole numbers and their opposites.
Absolute Value - The positive or negative integers distance from zero on the number line.
(Think spaces from 0). The absolute value is always positive or zero.
Inverse Operations - Addition and Subtraction are the opposite of each other, they are the inverse
operation of each other. Therefore, when subtracting a number, add its opposite.
Examples:
Negative - Positive = Negative
(- 5) - 3 = -5 + (-3) = -8
Positive - Negative = Positive + Positive = Positive
5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8
Negative - Negative = Negative + Positive = Use the sign of the larger number and subtract (Change double negatives to a positive)
(-5) - (-3) = ( -5) + 3 = -2
(-3) - ( -5) = (-3) + 5 = 2
(-3) - ( -5) = (-3) + 5 = 2
Subtracting Integers | ||
Subtract | Add The Opposite | Result |
+9 - +4 = | +9 + -4 = | +5 |
+9 - -4 = | +9 + +4 = | +13 |
-9 - +4 = | -9 + -4 = | -13 |
-9 - -4 = | -9 + +4 = | -5 |
Use the number line for adding and subtracting integers:
- Add a positive integer by moving to the right on the number line.
- Add a negative integer by moving to the left on the number line.
- Subtract an integer by adding its opposite.
